CANDY, the book, was not protected by U.S. copyright. Consequently, although it was a best-seller, the authors received no royalties. In order for the authors to make any money from the project, the race was on between the authors and the publisher (Maurice Girodias) to secure the copyright. Lawsuits emerged in both France and the U.S. Haley Mills (teen star of The Parent Trap) was cast on the Southern/Hoffenberg side—but Girodias did a secret deal with Christian Marquand and Marlon Brando—which blew the Mills plan out of the water.

Unfortunately, as Terry often lamented "the quintessential American role—she has GOT to be American" became a vehicle for Miss Teenage Sweden, Ewa Aulin. The resulting film is a mish-mash of 60s iconography—albeit with an all-star cast, including Richard Burton, Ringo Starr, James Coburn and Walter Matthau.

The Candy Men, by Nile Southern, chronicles the saga of the book Candy—including its ill-fated filming.
